'I just wanna be a woman': some not so simple ways. Class, femininity and affective entanglement

Seminarium współorganizowane jest przez Interdyscyplinarny Zespół Badań nad Dzieciństwem UW w ramach cyklu Childhood and youth series (lectures and workshops). 

Catherine is 21. She is part of a research project that has followed her life from age 4 until the present. She is driving along in her car and we hear a song, with the lines ‘I just wanna be a woman’ sung plaintively over and over. This paper considers what the song might mean in the context of what we learn from a very close reading of observation and interview data with her, her parents and teachers at various stages of her life. The lecture will describe the process of conducting a slow reading and argue that it presents to us an approach to what I call ‘affective entanglement’. We begin to understand how the complexity of the entanglement of family lives, lived at particular historical periods and in specific geographical locations, gives us a detailed insight into not only the entanglements that shape Catherine’s life, but also allow us to understand something about the affective transmission of class, gender and sexuality in all its complexity.

Valerie Walkerdine is Distinguished Research Professor in the School of Social Sciences, Cardiff University. She has been researching issues of class, gender and childhood for many years, and also, more recently, issues of community and de-industrialisation. The lecture is based on research undertaken for her Leverhulme Major Research Fellowship, which she is currently in the process of writing up. She is also editor of the journal Subjectivity (Palgrave) and a recent lecture on class and feminism was recently published in that journal as part of their 10th anniversary celebrations:  'Of Dinosaurs and Divas: is class still relevant to feminist research?'

Projekt jest realizowany przez Stowarzyszenie Pracownia Etnograficzna im. Witolda Dynowskiego we współpracy z Instytutem Etnologii i Antropologii Kulturowej UW.
