Abstract:
I present a case study of one boy’s ADHD diagnosis understood as a collaborative, dispersed and asymmetrical social process marked by uncertainty and conflict. I explore the ways in which the psychiatric label is enacted in the everyday life of a middle-class family in a medium-sized Polish town. The paper adds to the literature on contested illness as well as foregrounding the significance of the non-medical in a diagnostic work.
