Badania Margaret Comer koncentrują się na dziedzictwie masowych represji, sowieckich i postsowieckich sposobach upamiętniania oraz tworzenia dziedzictwa, upamiętnianiu i tworzeniu dziedzictwa Holokaustu, żałobie i pamięci oraz sporach na temat przeszłości. Szczególnie interesuje ją, w jaki sposób społeczeństwa po okresie represji przedstawiają przemoc, cierpienie, sprawstwo, postawę obojętnego świadka i bycie ofiarą w miejscach związanych z masową przemocą. Nadrzędnym celem jest analiza, w jaki sposób dziedzictwo przemocy z przeszłości może być wykorzystywane instrumentalnie, by uniknąć konfrontacji z tą przeszłością, a także w jaki sposób może być ono używane jako broń do podsycania współczesnej przemocy.

studia nad dziedzictwem i pamięcią (heritage studies, memory studies), muzeologia, niewygodne dziedzictwo, dziedzictwo i pamięć represji sowieckich, dziedzictwo i pamięć o Holokauście, dziedzictwo masowych represji i ludobójstwa, żałoba i możliwość opłakiwania (grievability), sporna pamięć (contested memory), instrumentalizacja przeszłości
