Haunted by refugees. Populist politics and media discourse after the summer of migration
The paper argues that to understand the securitization of migration and the way imaginations and institutions of security and fear operate and are being instrumentalized it is helpful to understand how security and fear are intertwined in reciprocal, relational and multiple ways. Both in the US and in Europe political and media discourses are shaped by emotional practices and references to emotional performances that draw upon the notion of fear. Also, their emphasis on an alleged “state of exception” informs individual actors’ fears as emotional practices, leaving a lasting impression that potentially undermines democratic conceptions of the state and the society. Therefore, the paper argues that it is vital to differentiate between fear as an emotional practice and fear as a political strategy.
Alexandra Schwell is a Professor at the Department of Cultural Analysis at the University of Klagenfurt. She obtained her PhD in Comparative Cultural and Social Anthropology from the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder). Research interests include border studies, anthropology of the political, ethnographic methods and Europeanization processes. She was work package leader in the FREE project (“Football Research in an Enlarged Europe”, FP7) and subproject leader within the “Doing World Heritage” project (funded by the Austrian Ministry of Science, Research, and Economy).
