Following the decision on partial mobilization announced by Vladimir Putin, mass protests broke out in Dagestan. They were different from those in other parts of Russia, as there were fierce clashes with police officers.
"Dagestan residents have many reasons to dislike the authorities. If they take to the streets and police officers beat and arrest them, they fight back without turning the other cheek," Iwona Kaliszewska, Ph.D., from the University of Warsaw, says. As she points out, the mobilization sparked general anti-state rhetoric, and the authorities quickly realized that forceful solutions would not work in the long run.
