The conservative backlash against women’s and LGBTIQ rights is a global phenomenon. In Europe, the Americas, and beyond, conservative religious and political actors present ‘gender ideology’ (an umbrella term covering sex education, women’s rights, LGBTQ rights, and gender mainstreaming) as a threat to the family and the nation. Despite the global nature of “anti-genderism”, however, there is little research approaching the issue from a comparative, cross-regional perspective.

This event will bring together anthropologists, political scientists, and sociologists of gender and sexuality to reflect comparatively on current conflicts over gender and sexuality in Central Eastern Europe and Latin America. In the first half, the speakers will reflect on the different institutional, religious, and social histories of conflicts over “gender ideology” in both regions. The second half will focus on gender and “anti-genderism” in the context of current political events, new legislations, and changing social settings in Central Eastern Europe and Latin America.
