Anthropology of ritual and performance, religion, tourism, globalization, and mobility. Ethnography of Afro-Brazilian culture and religion, and African diaspora in the Americas.

Biography

Assistant professor at the Institute of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology of the University of Warsaw. He holds a Ph.D. from University of London (awarded in 2009). Before joining the Institute of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology, he was Associate Professor at Universidad Autónoma de San Luis Potosí, Mexico. He has done ethnographic fieldwork in Brazil, Mexico, and the U.K. He has studied capoeira, an Afro- Brazilian ritual-martial art -dance, for more than fifteen years and is a leading expert in the field. He is the author of four books: El Arte de Engañar: Ensayos de Antropología Social (Bonilla-Artigas, 2022) Capoeira, Mobility, and Tourism: Preserving an Afro-Brazilian Tradition in a Globalized World (Lexington Books, 2019), Entre dos Mundos: La Antropología Radical de Paul Stoller (Bonilla-Artigas, 2018), and Power in Practice: The Pragmatic Anthropology of Afro-Brazilian Capoeira (Berghahn Books, 2017). He is also a coeditor of six books and has published research articles in international peer-reviewed journals. In 2016, he received a Fulbright Visiting Professor scholarship, where he carried out a research project about the life and work of anthropologist Paul Stoller at West Chester University of Pennsylvania. He has been a visiting professor at West Chester University (2016-2017), in Mexico at Universidad Iberoamericana (2015), and at El Colegio de San Luis (2012).
