Biography

I graduated from the Department of Ethnography at the University of Warsaw in 1971. In 1976, I completed non-degree postgraduate programme in Land Use Planning at the Faculty of Architecture, Warsaw University of Technology. Within my work in various academic and research institutions, I have always been dedicated to ethnographic fieldwork and organisation of research. Thanks to these experiences, I am deeply convinced that among research questions such as 'who?' 'when?' 'how?' the most important question is 'why?'. It is important to answer this question no matter if we study material culture artefacts, organisation of space or contemporary social behaviours. The reality around us and almost all human behaviours are rooted in an economic, social and cultural context. This is why, while conducting ethnographic fieldwork and considering why people behave in a certain way in a certain situation, I try to use historical sources and track the process of social, economic, sometimes political development, the development of the field and the group in question.
I am mostly interested in regional and historical diversity of Poland, religion and social behaviours of inhabitants of Masovia and Podlachia, contemporary culture of the Vilnius region (Lithuania).
At the Institute of Ethnology and Cultural Anthropology I was in charge of the Archive.
